Kargil, July 25: Stressing the importance of livestock-based livelihoods in Ladakh, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon, on Saturday called for greater support to the livestock sector while inaugurating a one-day workshop on “Poultry Farming in High Altitude Areas of Ladakh: Sustainable Practices and Farmers’ Empowerment” at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kargil.

The workshop, organised by the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Poultry Breeding, ICAR Leh Centre, High Altitude Livestock Research Institute (HALRI), brought together scientists, agricultural experts, policymakers and farmers to promote sustainable poultry farming in Ladakh.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Akhoon highlighted the role of livestock in ensuring nutritional security and urged research institutions to develop climate-resilient technologies suited to Ladakh’s unique conditions. Reaffirming LAHDC Kargil’s commitment to the farming community, he said the Council would continue promoting livestock-based enterprises through subsidised schemes, revolving funds and other government support programmes.

He also pointed to the success of fish farming in Kargil, noting that around 120 fish farming units have already been established, and encouraged unemployed youth, women and economically weaker families to explore poultry and other allied farming activities as sustainable livelihood options.

During the workshop, experts showcased research on high-altitude poultry breeds, including Vanaraja and Him Samridhi, which have shown promising results in Ladakh’s harsh climate. Scientists also conducted technical sessions on breed improvement, poultry nutrition, disease management, chick rearing and sustainable farming practices.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, Prof. Saket Kushwaha, emphasised the need to establish a poultry feed mill in Ladakh and described poultry farming as a “living bank” that enhances household income and food security.

The workshop concluded with experts urging farmers to remain connected with Krishi Vigyan Kendras and government departments to benefit from training, veterinary services, technical guidance and financial assistance, while promoting poultry farming as a viable livelihood option in the cold desert region.
