Leh: Former Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, on Monday said that the much-awaited breakthrough of the strategically important Zojila Tunnel is likely to take place on June 9, marking a historic milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.

Gyalson made the remarks after visiting the tunnel project site along with senior BJP leaders, including BJP Jammu and Kashmir State President Sat Sharma, General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, MLA Dr. D.K. Manyal, MLA Ajay Mahajan, Senior Vice President Haji Inayat Ali, former Executive Councillor Ghulam Mehdi, Mahila Morcha President Rinchen Dolkar, State Media Secretaries Rinchen Dolkar and Hasan Pasha, District President Assadullah Munshi, Councillor Abdul Wahid and other party functionaries.

During the visit, the delegation reviewed the progress of the project and received a detailed briefing from officials. The leaders also went inside the tunnel to witness the ongoing construction work firsthand.

Speaking on the occasion, Gyalson said the project authorities informed the delegation that the tunnel breakthrough is expected on June 9 and that Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is likely to attend the event.

Describing the tunnel as a lifeline for Ladakh, Gyalson said the all-weather connectivity project would significantly improve transportation, strengthen economic activity, and accelerate development in the region. He noted that the project, being executed at a cost of over ₹8,000 crore, reflects the Centre’s commitment to transforming infrastructure in border areas.

Gyalson credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the rapid pace of development in Ladakh, claiming that the region has witnessed unprecedented infrastructure growth over the past 12 years.

He also expressed gratitude to the Government of India, project officials, engineers and labourers involved in the construction of the tunnel for their efforts in completing one of the country’s most challenging infrastructure projects.

The Zojila Tunnel, once completed, will provide year-round road connectivity between Ladakh and Kashmir, reducing travel disruptions caused by heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions on the Zojila Pass.
