The recent visit of the Sheep Husbandry Department’s senior officials to Beema reflects a timely push to strengthen Ladakh’s shrinking livestock sector. Director Sheep Husbandry UT Ladakh Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, along with DSHO Leh Dr. Tsewang Morup and Deputy Director Pashmina Goat Project Upshi Dr. Tundup Namgail, inspected the upcoming prefabricated Sheep and Wool Development Centre and interacted with breeders from Dha, Beema and Sanit.
The outreach highlighted both progress and persistent gaps. Breeders raised concerns over recurring skin infections, limited access to timely treatment and the urgent need for winter sheds at high-pasture sites. While the officers assured support and explained existing schemes, the challenges underline how vulnerable pastoral communities remain despite long-standing dependence on livestock.
Dr. Hussain’s call to revive rearing practices and rebuild livestock numbers points to the direction Ladakh must take—moving beyond routine welfare measures to a structured system that improves veterinary care, enhances extension services and strengthens wool marketing. The new centre in Beema has the potential to become a key link in this transition.
Distribution of portable tents offered immediate relief, and the department acknowledged community support, including the Nambardar’s land contribution. The team also inspected the new Block Office in Khaltsi, expected to improve administrative delivery. For Ladakh’s breeders, consistent follow-up will determine how far this outreach truly goes.
