Khaltsi, September 15, 2025 – A three-day National Workshop on “Air Pollution to Climate Change, Extreme Weather and the Indian Himalayan Region” commenced today at Sindhu Central University, Khaltsi.
Key topics of the workshop include the relationship between air pollution and climate change, the impact of extreme weather events such as floods and landslides, and the broader implications for the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and the millions of people dependent on its resources.
The inaugural session was graced by distinguished guests, including Dr. Shivkumar, CEO of ANRF (online), as Chief Guest; Bhanu Prabha, IAS, Administrative Secretary (Higher Education and Skill Development) as Guest of Honour; Prof. Sachin S. Gunthe (IIT Madras); Dr. Chandra, Secretary, EC, SCU (online); and Prof. Kamakoti (Chair, Executive Council, SCU) (online). The experts highlighted the urgent need to address rising air pollution, shifting climate patterns, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the Himalayan belt, which affect not only ecology but also livelihoods and cultural heritage.
During the workshop, participants were engaged in technical sessions, panel discussions, and presentations focusing on scientific studies, policy interventions, and community-driven initiatives. Special emphasis is being placed on sustainable development, adaptation measures, and resilience building for mountain communities.
Speaking on the occasion, the organizers stressed that the workshop aims to create a collaborative platform for knowledge sharing and to generate actionable recommendations for mitigating climate change impacts in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
The three-day program also features interactive sessions with students and local stakeholders to encourage community awareness and participation.
