Leh: The administration of Ladakh has intensified its efforts to fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream by making the Union Territory as a Carbon neutral.

“With the adoption of solar energy and greenery, Ladakh has started its journey to becoming carbon neutral. All departments are working in this direction,” an official told Indus Dispatch.

He added that the carbon levels are very low in the Union Territory but still efforts are being to eliminate carbon levels from the environment.

In order to make Union Territory of  Ladakh as carbon-neutral, the administration has planted saplings and replaced diesel engines by providing electricity to villagers from the grid stations.

“The power department has provided electricity from the power grid to 26 villages in Leh district within the last two years by running a campaign. Earlier in many of these villages electricity was provided by diesel generators. Out of seven villages, generators have been removed, these are Nyoma, Chumathang, Bema, Hanu, Achithang, Kanji, Sku, Kaya villages,” an official informed Indus Dispatch

There was a lot of pollution from diesel generators. The Electricity Department of Ladakh has laid 158 km of HT line and 108.9 km of LT line since the year 2020.

With this remote villages like Rabel Sumdo, Sku Kaya, Skumpta, Kanji, Yolchung, Fotoskar, Hanupata, Ejang, Chinchlang Sumda have been connected to the grid.

Electricity infrastructure has been strengthened in both the districts of the Union Territory.

More than five lakh plants have been planted in Ladakh in the last few years alone.  Not only Ladakh administration, army and other security forces are also involved in this.

On this World Environment Day alone, one and a half lakh plants were planted in Chushul of East Ladakh.

Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur himself took part in this campaign. In the last few years, three lakh plants have been planted in the remote Durbuk sub-division of Leh.

Moreover, the forest department has set a target of planting 1.80 lakh saplings this year.

“The expectations of the people are being met by strengthening the power infrastructure from the year 2020. Work is also being done to make Ladakh a precedent in solar energy production in the country, ” said Member of Parliament    Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, MP of Ladakh

“Solar energy is being worked on very fast in Ladakh. Work of 20 MW solar power project has started in Fayang, Leh. There have been tenders for setting up some solar energy projects. In the coming days, work will also be intensified on installing solar trees, and solar carports. – Ravindra Kumar, Administrative Secretary of Ladakh.
