Book Review | Dreams Implant- An Enigmatic Tale of Dreary Implanting Dreams

Mystery and thriller genre has always been a favourite with book lovers. People surely love plunging into the travails of catching a murderer or following investigation trails with suave detectives. However, various obscure elements used in mystery stories up their suspense quotient, and sometimes eeriness quotient too. There is also the inherent quality of some authors to partake in somewhat different storylines and deploy murky twists and turns in the narrative. The author “Partho Bose” comes up with such a thriller book “Dreams Implant” which will make the readers hooked to the story till the end.
The storyline follows David Bowman, a famous businessman who owns a successful advertising agency in New York. Apart from his professional pursuits, he is helpful and kind-hearted. He is also very protective when it comes to his family, which includes his wife Alexis and daughter April. He is however, haunted by a nightmare where he meets with an accident and his wife is killed. The twist in the plot comes when he reads about the accidents of his ex-colleagues and batchmates’ wives’ deaths in a similar incident. He feels that something is common in all these instances and he starts investigating further about this.
In this investigative pursuit, he travels to Chicago, Florida and San Francisco to find about the truth and any potential link between the nightmare and the accidents. He soon discovers that his wife and daughter have been kidnapped. He then begins his search for Alexis and April and is helped in this by Martha, a private detective and a former associate of his lawyer wife. The lead in this trail is his secretary Jane. As the plot progresses, David finds a more sinister purpose behind the nightmare than he ever could have imagined.
The first and foremost thing that I liked about the book was its title. The title is very confounding and different, and it will lead readers to ponder about its meaning and relevance to the story. However, the implications of “Dreams Implant” become evident on reading the blurb, and further clarifications come in the story. The blurb on the back cover is plain and doesn’t do justice to the thrilling storyline of the book. Also, the blurb tells a lot about the story and reveals some suspenseful elements from it. The front cover of the book is uncanny and obscure, which goes in line with the story and will attract book lovers of such genres to the book.
The storyline of the book progresses well and is well-written. However, at 168 pages, it is somewhat short and more details and characters could’ve been incorporated in the book. The character portrayals are good, especially the characters of David, Alexis and Martha are explored with considerable depth and the enigma surrounding them has been played within the book very well. There are some gripping twists and turns in the story, however the end is somewhat rushed with.
This book should be read for its different take on a mysterious tale where a connecting ploy between nightmares and actual incidents occurs, and the person with whom it happens himself plays detective and starts investigation, emerging as the quintessential hero in the process. Also, his portrayal as a family man, a person who derives strength from his family and for whom family comes first, will also go down well with Indian readers. However, if the story would’ve been set in Indian context with Indian characters, the book would’ve gone down better with Indian readers. But keeping some inconsistencies aside, this is a fascinating and mysterious tale which will keep readers hooked till its unpredictable and riveting end.
