Dharamshala: The Dalai Lama, the 14th Dalai Lama has been awarded the first Peace Prize by the Gandhi Mandela Foundation. Himachal Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar presented the award to the Dalai Lama at a function organized at Mcleodganj. The Dalai Lama thanked the Foundation for the award and expressed his best wishes. He emphasized on kindness, unity and non-violence in the world.
Nandan Jha, Secretary General of the Foundation, said, “We are here to confer the Gandhi-Mandela Award on His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the first time. We formed the world’s largest jury headed by former Chief Justice of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. After receiving more than 500 nominations from across the world including former Prime Ministers and Presidents, Dalai Lama was finally selected in the year 2020 and is the winner of Gandhi Mandela Award 2019.
The religious leader was selected in 2020. But the award could not be given due to the Covid pandemic. Now that the situation was normal, the award was presented to the Dalai Lama by the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
