The labour department has been at the forefront of building a new Ladakh since the dawn of the Union Territory, with a number of achievements to its credit in the past three years.
A total of 5758 active workers were registered in this period, and were issued labour cards. An amount of Rs 7.73 Crore was disbursed to active registered workers in both districts, as educational, injury, disability, chronic disease assistance and COVID-19 relief, under various welfare schemes.
As many as 26277 unorganised workers were registered on e-Shram portal including 9148 from Leh and 17129 from Kargil, while Rs 2.43 crore was spent to provide financial assistance to labourers during Covid-19 lockdown to support them.
In Leh, 56 cases were reported and disposed under payment of wages act where Rs 17 Lakh were recovered from defaulters employers and remunerated to the labourers, while four cases were reported and disposed under workmen compensation act, and a sum of Rs 22 Lakh was recovered and remunerated to the victim labourers.
The department has organised awareness camps in all sub divisions of the UT regarding regarding labourers schemes, even as it provided on-spot registration facilities to labourers, issuance of financial assistance form, renewal of cards, registration of shops and establishments, renewable of form C etc in far flung areas like Zanskar. The department is also constructing labour sarai at Sankoo, Kargil, Drass, Shakar Chiktan, Zanskar.
