The grant of Union Territory status for Ladakh was a result of decades of struggle by the people of Ladakh. Under the leadership of Thupstan Chhewang, Ladakh intensified its agitation for UT in 1989. Some lives were lost in police firing and many got beaten. Yangchan Dolma (Ama Chocho), 85, is one of the women activists, who played an active role in the agitation. She was beaten by police, she saw how Nawang, Dorjey and Stobdan were killed in police firing.
